Chinese Tariffs on U.S. LNG: Trade and Price Implications

In early 2025, newly re-elected President Donald Trump introduced sweeping tariffs, including a 10% baseline on most imports. Although energy products were excluded, the policy triggered a global market sell-off that spilled into oil and gas. A retaliatory 15% Chinese tariff on US LNG in February led to a complete halt in US LNG exports to China, with cargoes redirected to Europe. This shift disrupted global LNG flows and temporarily decoupled LNG prices (JKM) from US natural gas prices (Henry Hub). While JKM fell due to oversupply in Europe, Henry Hub surged amid tight domestic supply and a harsh winter. The divergence is likely short-lived, with fundamental pricing links expected to return as markets rebalance.
